Chapter One: The People Who Clapped When I Fell

THE PEOPLE WHO CLAPPED WHEN I FELL

He thought he had friends. What he had were witnesses waiting for his downfall.

     The People Closest to You

When Daniel lost everything, the first thing he discovered was that poverty was not the worst thing that could happen to a person.
The worst thing was discovering that some people had been waiting for you to become poor.

For thirty two years, Daniel had believed that loyalty was a language everyone understood. If you stood by people during their difficult moments, he believed, they would remember you when life finally smiled on you.

    He was wrong.

Daniel was not the richest man in his town, nor was he the most educated. But he had something that made people gravitate towards him: he had a good heart, a generous spirit and an unusual willingness to help people even when he had little to offer.

When his childhood friend Michael lost his job, Daniel allowed him to stay in his two bedroom apartment for six months without paying rent.

When another friend, Kofi, needed money to complete a professional course, Daniel emptied the savings he had been keeping for his mother's medical expenses and lent him the money.

And when Linda, a woman he had known since their school days, needed someone to help her establish a small business, Daniel introduced her to a supplier, negotiated favourable prices and helped her find her first customers.
He never asked for anything in return.

"That is what friendship means," he would tell his younger sister, Abena. "You cannot calculate every good thing you do for people."

    Abena would shake her head.

"Daniel, there is a difference between helping people and making yourself responsible for their lives."

    He would laugh.

    "You worry too much."

    She would say nothing more.
But there are warnings that sound like complaints until life teaches you their meaning.
Everything changed when Daniel secured a contract that transformed his small event management business into one of the most promising businesses in the area.

For the first time, he could pay his workers on time, support his mother without borrowing money and begin planning for the future he had always imagined.
His friends were the first people he celebrated with.

He bought drinks, invited them to dinner and spoke openly about his plans.
    Michael raised his glass.

"Brother, when you become a big man, do not forget us."

Daniel laughed and placed his hand on Michael's shoulder.

"Forget you? We started together. Whatever comes, we rise together."

    Everyone laughed.
    Everyone drank.
    Everyone wished him well.

But behind the smiles, something different was happening.
Michael was beginning to feel that Daniel's success made his own life look like a failure. Kofi had convinced himself that Daniel owed him more opportunities because of their friendship. Linda, meanwhile, had begun to resent the fact that Daniel was doing well without needing her approval.

None of them admitted these feelings aloud.
Instead, they continued calling him brother.
And Daniel, trusting the names people gave him, never thought to question their intentions.

One Friday evening, after a long day at work, Daniel received a phone call from an unfamiliar number.

"Good evening, Mr Daniel. My name is Richard. I am calling from the company you recently signed a contract with."
    Daniel sat up.

"Yes, good evening. Is there a problem?"
    There was a brief silence.

"I think you should come to our office on Monday morning. There are some documents we need to discuss with you."

    "What documents?"

    Another silence.

"Mr Daniel, we have received information suggesting that some of the documents submitted under your name may not be genuine."

    Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"That is impossible. I submitted everything myself."

"I understand. But someone has also alleged that you made an unauthorised financial arrangement with one of our representatives."

Daniel stood up and began pacing around the room.

    "Who made this allegation?"

"I'm sorry, sir. I cannot disclose that over the phone."

    The call ended.
For several minutes, Daniel remained standing in the middle of his living room, holding his phone as though it had suddenly become too heavy.
He reviewed every document he had submitted. He thought about every meeting he had attended. He tried to remember every conversation that could have been misunderstood.

Then he did something that would later haunt him.
    He called Michael.
After all, Michael had helped him organise some of the paperwork.

"Mike, something strange is happening. The company says somebody has made allegations against me."

    Michael sounded surprised.

    "What? Who would do that?"
"I don't know. You remember all the documents we worked on together?"
"Of course, brother. Don't worry. We will sort it out."

    Those words calmed Daniel.
He did not know that Michael was sitting in a parked car when he received the call.

And he did not know that, on the passenger seat beside Michael, lay a brown envelope containing copies of the very documents the company was questioning.
Michael stared at the envelope after the call ended.

    His phone vibrated.
A message appeared on the screen.

    "Has he found out yet?"

Michael looked around before typing his reply.

"Not everything. But he will soon."

He sent the message, put his phone away and started the car.

For the first time in their friendship, Michael was afraid of Daniel discovering the truth. Not because he feared losing a friend.

But because he knew what Daniel would do when he discovered who had betrayed him.
And Michael was not the only person involved.
