His Majesty Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II and His Excellency Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda are captured here in 1965, sharing a contemplative stroll through the gardens of Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asante Kingdom. President Banda’s visit followed his participation in the 1965 Organization of African Unity Conference in Accra. The courtesy call to the Asantehene was more than protocol — it was a gesture of Pan-African solidarity and mutual respect between two leaders deeply committed to the liberation and dignity of the African continent.
The bond between them was rooted in history. Before assuming the presidency, Dr. Banda had lived and practiced medicine in Kumasi during the 1950s after qualifying in England. His years of service to the people of Asante forged enduring ties of goodwill. In 1958, he returned to Nyasaland to lead the struggle for self-determination. Upon independence in 1964, Nyasaland became the Republic of Malawi, with Dr. Banda as its first president.
This image endures as a symbol of cross-cultural diplomacy — where the Golden Stool and the new African republics met not as strangers, but as partners in the shared vision of a united and self-reliant Africa.
