At an emergency meeting of the Asanteman Council today, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially announced that he will embark on an international trip beginning Wednesday, 27th May 2026, with scheduled visits to Poland and later Canada.
In his absence, the occupant of the Silver Stool and Nwisiahene of Asanteman, Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, will oversee affairs of Asanteman until the King’s return.
For Kumasi affairs specifically, Nana Nkwantakesehene has been tasked to take charge. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as both the Kumasi Krontihene, Bantamahene Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia, and Akwamuhene, Akyamfuor Asafo Boakye Agyeman, Asafohene, are currently out of the country, while the Adontenhene is on medical leave. In addition, the Nifahene Stool, the Asokore Mampong Stool, remain vacant.
Sources within the council indicate that the Nkwantakesehene will work closely with senior chiefs and members of the Kumasi Traditional Council to ensure the smooth administration of Kumasi and traditional matters during the Asantehene’s absence.
The emergency council sitting drew significant attention from traditional authorities and observers, highlighting the structured leadership system within Asanteman whenever the occupant of the Golden Stool is away on official duties abroad.
